Background of the Study
The increasing reliance on network connectivity in academic institutions has necessitated the deployment of both wired and wireless network infrastructures. Wired networks, utilizing Ethernet cables, offer stable, high-speed connectivity with minimal interference, making them ideal for data-intensive applications such as research labs, administrative operations, and faculty offices. Conversely, wireless networks provide mobility and convenience, enabling students, faculty, and staff to access resources from various locations within the university campus.
Federal University, Lokoja, has implemented both wired and wireless networks to support its academic, administrative, and research activities. However, variations in performance, reliability, and security between these two network types remain a critical concern. Factors such as signal interference, network congestion, and security vulnerabilities affect wireless networks, while wired networks face limitations in flexibility and scalability.
This study aims to compare the performance of wired and wireless networks at Federal University, Lokoja, assessing factors such as speed, latency, reliability, and security. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each network type will provide insights into optimizing the university’s networking infrastructure to enhance efficiency and user experience.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing adoption of wireless networks in academic institutions, performance inconsistencies, security vulnerabilities, and connectivity issues pose challenges for users. Many universities, including Federal University, Lokoja, struggle to balance the advantages of wired and wireless networks to ensure optimal performance.
Wired networks provide high-speed and stable connections but require extensive cabling and infrastructure investments, limiting scalability. Wireless networks, on the other hand, offer convenience but are prone to bandwidth congestion, interference, and security threats. The lack of a comparative performance evaluation at Federal University, Lokoja, makes it difficult to determine the most effective networking strategy.
This study seeks to analyze the performance of wired and wireless networks in terms of speed, latency, reliability, and security, providing recommendations to optimize network performance.
